The seven petitions

The petitions ask that God’s name be honored, his kingdom come, and his will be done; then for daily bread, forgiveness, help in temptation, and deliverance from evil. Their order forms both desire and action. Asking for bread calls attention to the hungry; asking forgiveness involves becoming willing to forgive. Prayer does not remove the need to resist harm and seek justice.
