Library introduction · Catechism 2083–2141

Faith, worship and religious freedom

The first commandment directs worship, faith, hope, and love toward God. It rejects idolatry, superstition, and attempts to control spiritual powers for selfish ends. Religious freedom concerns the dignity of persons and freedom from coercion, not a claim that every religious assertion is equally true. Authentic worship calls for justice and mercy in the rest of life.
