Library introduction · Catechism 2534–2557

Desire, detachment and poverty of heart

The tenth commandment addresses envy and disordered desire for another person’s goods. Gratitude, generosity, and poverty of heart loosen the grip of comparison and accumulation. Detachment does not mean indifference to real material needs or an excuse to romanticize destitution. Christians are called to seek God while working for a world in which other people’s basic needs are met.
