Library introduction · Catechism 631–637

Christ among the dead

The Creed’s statement that Christ descended to the dead affirms the reality of his death and the reach of his saving work. The abode of the dead in this confession should not simply be equated with the final state of damnation. Christ’s victory embraces those who awaited redemption. The short creedal phrase needs its biblical and historical vocabulary explained carefully.
