Conversion, penance and reconciliation

The sacrament of penance serves the baptized person’s return to communion after sin. Contrition, confession, the priest’s absolution, and satisfaction belong together. Examination of conscience seeks honest conversion without reducing God’s mercy to a checklist. Absolution does not remove the duty to make appropriate reparation or the civil consequences of wrongdoing. The confessional seal protects what is disclosed sacramentally.
