Virtues and gifts of the Spirit

Virtues are stable dispositions to do good. Prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance organize moral life; faith, hope, and charity orient it directly toward God. The gifts of the Holy Spirit sustain responsiveness to grace. Growth comes through repeated choices, prayer, sacramental life, and help from others. A virtue becomes visible in ordinary conduct rather than only in exceptional heroism.
