Emotions and moral life

Emotions such as fear, anger, desire, joy, and sadness belong to embodied human life. They are not simply sins or virtues by themselves. Their moral significance depends on how they relate to reason, choice, and action. Spiritual growth involves ordering and integrating emotion, not pretending not to feel. Compassion also requires recognizing when professional help is needed.
