Family and public responsibilities

Honoring father and mother extends into family responsibilities across generations and duties within civil society. Parents have a serious responsibility to nurture and educate children; children are persons with dignity, not property. Adult family duties differ from childhood obedience. Respect never requires accepting abuse or obeying an unjust command. Public authority and citizenship are also evaluated by moral responsibility.
