Persons and communities

Human beings flourish through relationships and communities. Society exists for persons, and persons have duties toward one another. The family, local associations, civil society, and public institutions each contribute to common life. Subsidiarity protects appropriate local responsibility while calling larger bodies to help when needed. It does not excuse indifference when people or communities lack the resources to act.
