Eastern and Western divisions

Select a passage to highlight, add a note, or link it to a learning path.

Divisions between Eastern and Western Christians emerged through theological disputes, cultural differences, political conflict, and damaged relationships. No single date explains the whole separation. Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic communities must also be distinguished. Studying the divisions requires careful attention to each tradition’s own language and to current efforts toward reconciliation without minimizing real disagreements.
