Church Father · c. AD 347–420
Jerome
Translator of the Vulgate (the standard Latin Bible for over a millennium) from Hebrew and Greek; an irascible, combative correspondent even by the standards of ancient polemic — read his letters' rhetoric about opponents (Rufinus, Jovinian, and others) as one side of a real personal conflict, not settled historical judgment. His prefaces to the Vulgate's Old Testament books are a primary source for the early debate over the Hebrew canon versus the wider Greek Septuagint canon (the "Apocrypha" question).
