Church Father · c. AD 260–339
Eusebius of Caesarea
Bishop of Caesarea; present at Nicaea (325) and a close ally of Constantine. His Church History is the single most important narrative source for the first three centuries of Christianity, but he is writing 4th-century history, not a contemporary account, and quotes many earlier documents (letters, succession lists, Papias's fragments) that survive nowhere else — his selection and framing of those quotations is itself an editorial act to weigh. His Life of Constantine is openly celebratory, not a neutral biography.
