Church Father · c. AD 150–215 (dates approximate)
Clement of Alexandria
Head of the catechetical school of Alexandria; teacher of Origen. Deeply engaged with Greek philosophy, which he treats as a providential preparation for the Gospel among the Greeks the way the Law was for the Jews — a distinctive and, even at the time, debated stance. His major trilogy (Protrepticus/Exhortation, Paedagogus/Instructor, Stromata/Miscellanies) moves from conversion to moral formation to advanced gnosis; the Stromata is deliberately unsystematic (its name means "patchwork") and should not be read as a tight doctrinal treatise.
