Church Father · AD 354–430
Augustine of Hippo
Augustine was bishop of Hippo in Roman North Africa and one of the most influential theologians in the history of Western Christianity. Before his conversion, recounted in his Confessions, he pursued a career as a teacher of rhetoric and explored Manichaeism and Neoplatonism before his baptism in AD 387. His mother, Monica, prayed for his conversion for years before his baptism and died shortly afterward; his account of her death and his prayer for her soul remains one of the most widely read passages in Christian literature.
